Continuing in Canada…

Before I start today’s post, I have to give proper credit for my “featured pic” with is the large one above the title “Continuing in Canada…” – it was taken by our travel buddy, Steve Dempsey, who is a professional photographer (Steven Dempsey Photography).  He certainly can capture the moment – don’t you all agree?  Thanks Steve for sharing your awesome pics with us!

Our travels since my last post have thankfully been less exciting – meaning no more need for calling the police!  The only excitement we’ve had since then has been the great views from the windshield and seeing the sites!

We pulled out of Williams Lake and rolled along toward our next stop – Prince George.  Our plan was to stay at Treasure Cove Casino.  I called ahead and they were more than happy to have us come stay the night!

We stopped for lunch in Quesnel at the Visitor Center.  We went in and hoped to see the museum that was attached to the visitor center but it was a VERY small room with some displays (the ones we could see from the door were filled with china) and we decided we didn’t want to spend $10.  I know – we are so cheap!

We asked at the visitor center about a bridge that a friend told me about, but she didn’t have any idea what I was talking about so we had our lunch and moved on.

The roads were in good shape, but there were some steep climbs and descents along the way and the views just wouldn’t quit!  Trees that went on forever!  Like an ocean of different shades of green!  The green gradually switched to a more arid looking terrain as we drove north.   We did get a quick glimpse of a Bald Eagle – a symbol from home – but he/she was too quick – couldn’t get the camera out in time.  It flew right over us!

how many of you have eaten lunch with this view?

We backed up to the curb when we got to the casino, with Steve and Linda right next to us, and a Class C on the other side.  There were a bunch of other rigs there also, spread out in the huge parking area.  Bill and Steve went into the casino to get the official ok and also to see if there were any coupons or specials for signing up for the players club.  The only thing they offered was $10 each in free play.  Thanks but no thanks!

Bill and I decided to go to check out Real Canandian Superstore, which is sort of like a SuperWalmart.  Their prices were really good so we got a few things then went home for some TV.  We’ve been binge watching Boardwalk Empire, we are about half way through season 3.

image

In the morning, we were ready to pull out 7 mins ahead of the planned for time of 9am!  US!  Imagine that?  We made good time getting to Dawson Creek.  Linda and Steve went on to Walmart, our new home, while Bill and I stopped at Northern Lights CG to dump.  Steve found this CG listed on an app, Sani-Dump as being able to dump and take on water there, but word to the wise – ALWAYS call and double check before showing up.  Evidently this CG had cemented over their dump station 6 YEARS ago!  No biggie – the office referred us to another place, Mile 0 Campsite – FREE dump station and potable water – with a donation box right there.  AWESOME!  With rains and wind expected, coupled with wanting to see a few things we thought we would stay 2 nights – weird huh?  Around here it seems very normal though.  We aren’t the only ones.  I read on a blog once that this couple stayed at that same Walmart a WEEK!  With permission from the manager!

Dumping at Mile 0 Campsite – FREE!  Also – FREE potable water fill!   Donations gladly accepted!

We went out to see Kiskatinaw Bridge, in spite of the nasty weather, which is part of the original Alcan, they stopped using it when they built the new section, which shortened the Alaska Highway by about 35 miles.

Since the Visitor Center was CLOSED on Sunday – we went back Monday morning before pulling out! Whoever heard of a Visitor Center being closed on a Sunday?

image

image
We really wanted to watch the movie about the building of the AK Highway, but it is an hour long – so we decided to stop on the way back, didn’t want to spend an hour watching it on a long drive day, which turned out to be even longer than originally planned for!

image

Our next planned stop was Fort Nelson, where we could refuel and look into filling propane.  Its been getting quite chilly at night, and we emptied one of our 40# tanks.  (to clarify, we started with about 28# in that tank – we had filled up at Park of the Sierras, but then Bill filled a bunch of the small grill size bottles).  We arrived in Fort Nelson and parked at their Visitor Center.  They had some very nice displays and items for sale, as well as brochures for lots of different things.  Even though there is a sign that says “no overnight parking”, we decided to ask anyway, thinking that might be more for the busier season when there wouldn’t be a whole lot of room, right now the place was all but empty, so it couldn’t hurt to try, right?  Well, the very nice lady behind the desk said it was not advised, as we would get a ticket from the enforcement officers for sure.  Oh well!  After a quick conversation, it became clear we were all thinking the same thing – lets keep moving for Muncho Lake!  This is where we had decided to spend a few days, having heard how beautiful and peaceful it is.

image
250 miles to go to Fort Nelson! Little did we know at the time I took this that we would continue on an additional 148 miles to Muncho Lake!
image
This is one of the steepest grades we have gone down so far 10% – we are doing 30mph in 2nd gear -jake brake worked like a charm!  awesome!
image
this is the area where they had to evacuate a lot of people – this is all we saw of the fire

image
these little “towns” that had these trailers set up like barracks were for pipeline workers – and were the only thing around for miles – except maybe a fuel station and restaurant.
image
I would have loved to get one of these for Jessie’s girls but they were $150! OUCH!

After a 3 ½ hour push, we finally pulled into McDonald Campground, which is part of Muncho Lake Provincial Park.  We were exhausted (yes, even those of us not driving!), but also feeling awesome!  The whole atmosphere changed on the way from Fort Nelson to Muncho Lake.  Before Fort Nelson, and especially before Dawson Creek, the drive, although filled with great views, didn’t quite have that far-removed feel we were expecting.  It wasn’t bad, we were just anxious to see wildlife and the jaw dropping scenery.  Well, for those going after us, be patient, it does happen – you will see bears, caribou, elk, porcupines, etc. and your jaw will drop and WOW! will become your new most used word.

image
we stopped at this overlook point – amazing vista point! We hadn’t had a signal for a long time, but for some reason, there was a tower right next to this pull-off. We all quick checked FB, voicemail and email!

This selfie a’la Steven makes me think of the song “Shiny Happy People” by R.E.M.

In all seriousness – I’m going to let the pictures do the “talking” – you’ll be glad I did!  I will add some info in the captions.

  1. I really enjoyed your latest post. The photos made me smile. It’s amazing all the things we’ve already seen and we aren’t even in Alaska yet! You’ve really captured the highlights of all our experiences together so far. Onwards!

    1. Thanks! Especially about the pics – means a lot coming from you! Hope to take some half as good as yours! Can’t wait to see what’s around the next corner!

  2. Great post, Kelly! However, I believe you failed to mention your virgin encounter with a particular Canadian delicacy called Poutine. It was the highlight of my day. 🙂

    1. Thanks!

Was planning to talk about Watson Lake, including Poutine next time around! I got tired of typing so ended with the bison!

  3. Great post and pictures…Love reliving our trip through your posts !! Our 5th wheel was so dirty after all the construction. Only suffered ONE little ping in the windshield !! Enjoy your trip and keep us posted !!

    1. Thanks Trina! I hate how dirty “Queenie and Copper” are – they both need a good scrubbing! We started the trip with a crack in the windshield, but it hasn’t traveled at all, not yet anyway! I’ll keep posting as signals allow!

  4. Now that you are on the Alaskan Highway so many of your pictures are similar to my pictures. I am getting so-o-o jealous! Keep posting and enjoy every minute!

  5. Great blog! I am really enjoying your trip and looking forward to so much more.

  6. Wow!! Amazing pictures. Loving it 🙂 Poutine is the best! Was able to get it in Whitefish, Montana when we were in Glacier park last year. Wish more places in the US had I! Tell Bill I have a nice Rapid Pallet shirt too 🙂

    1. Hey! You made Bill laugh – I’ve been wanting to throw that shirt out! He has so many nicer ones – oh well!
Poutine was good – although Linda said its better with cheese curds – this place used a cheddar blend!

  7. Great blog I am soooo jealous! Great pictures all around especially your featured picture and the picture of Bill with the kayak.

  8. Kelly great pictures. I am so jealous of the Bears. WOW that is great that you have seen two already. We paid a lot of money to see them last year and never saw one. Can’t wait to read more about your trip. Have a great week.

    1. As of today (5/14) we’ve seen a total of 6 black bears! Plus all those other animals! Awesome!
I’m sure I will get to post next week – will be in Haines – should have a great signal!

    1. I’m only leading the second part of your journey – you are leading the second part of my return trip! All good in the end!

  9. It is funny reading your post and traveling behind you…we saw that, we stayed there, we have that same picture! We are just south of Muncho and will be there tomorrow for a few days then heading to the hot springs! I woke up at 3:30 today as well and could not believe it was starting to get light!

    1. Muncho Lake is the BOMB! You guys could stay in Strawberry Flats, it’s not big rig friendly, but lots of trees – McDonald has big open sites with some trees – there are bigger and smaller sites – some have better views – check them all out before picking one!

    1. We have seen a lot of wildlife for sure! It’s hard to know where to look first – the animals or the view!

  10. Wow!! Amazing pictures. Did not know that they had so many bison up there
Would take me sometime getting used to the long day of daylight
    Safe travels
