Ohio Key (FL Keys) *Sunshine Key RV Resort* Jan 2015; Jan 2016

We LOVED Sunshine Key RV Resort!  In all fairness, part of that is the campground itself is nice, but part of it also is LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION!  It is located at MM38 – which tells you it is 38 miles from MM0, which is the very tip end of Key West.  The drive down to Key West takes a little less than an hour.  It is also at the southern end of the famous 7 Mile Bridge, with Marathon Key just to the north.  One of the coolest parts of this place is it is on it’s own island – Ohio Key.

We were planning to stay at a Walmart in Florida City the night before our arrival at Sunshine Key, we figured get up and drive down early and have most of the first day still available after setting up.  Well, we (ok, mostly ME!) didn’t feel comfortable at that Walmart, so I called ahead and asked if we could just drive down and spend the night in their “staging” area. (I had checked google-maps satellite view and it looked like there would be plenty of room).  They said “Sure!  Come on down!”.  So, we drove down and spent the night in their staging area – no charge!  So, as soon as our spot opened the next day, we were THERE!

The sites at this CG are small, but it is the Keys!  Some of the roads are paved, some are just crushed seashells.  Sites have palm trees that provide a bit of shade.  Be careful when booking, as there is a water treatment plant at the CG and you don’t want to be right next to it.  Water pressure, electric, etc. are all good.   Our Verizon signal could have been better, and there is cable, but not very many channels.

There are some activities, a very nice pool (which we did visit a couple times during ourstay), a marina (where we saw lots of birds and a manatee!  I got up a couple times to watch the sunrise!  Sunsets were nice there also, but you couldn’t directly see the horizon from the CG.  There are some seasonal sites, some permanent, but everyone was nice, I was never made to feel like we didn’t belong there.  There are also travel trailers and cabana park models available for rent. The one disappointing thing is the literature made it sound like there is a beach (it is an island after all) but there really isn’t.  We drove to Marathon Key to Sombrero Beach and also to Bahia Key to the beach, both were close by.

There is also a snack bar in the CG that offers breakfast and lunch.  We ate there twice for breakfast, it was decent food a bit overpriced, but we were in the Keys – sadly that is somewhat expected.

This place is totally a “Like ‘Em” and we are planning to return, either in the fall or next winter.

  1. We were there Oct-Dec 2014. We have same comments except we found the crowd to be a little cliquish. I said something to someone once that it would be nice to be included and was told that since we weren’t annuals we needed to expect to not be included. We loved the place just the same.
