Page, AZ Highlights

We left out of St George UT Elks with Page AZ Elks in the GPS. We had a couple from Sedona meeting us for an install.

The drive was absolutely gorgeous! I mostly followed Bill and snapped some pics along the way.

We arrived at the Elks in the late afternoon and quickly saw that while they had “sites,” those sites were very tight. We went inside to have someone come and tell us where they wanted us to park.

As always, we were warmly welcomed. One of the members came out and showed us where we could park. I was not happy with the spot as we were sticking out into the regular parking area. We couldn’t fit into one of the regular type sites on the edge of the property because they were so close together and people already parked there spilled into the empty spaces. We paid our one night, had a couple of drinks inside the lodge and decided to check out a nearby boondocking location, Lone Rock.

After going to check it out the following morning, and checking with our clients to make sure they were ok boondocking, we got moved. I was so happy! We had lots of space to ourselves and the view – WOW!

Not long after, our clients, Jim & Janet, arrived and choose a spot nearby. The sun was shining and our batteries were fully charged in no time!

Bill finished the install in a couple of days, while I got some chores done. While the daytime temps were in the 80’s, it cooled off nicely in the evenings – and got down into the high 50’s at night. The humidity was in the single digits, so shaded places were very comfortable. It did get very warm inside, but only in the late afternoons and then cooled down quickly as the sun went down, with all the fans going. Callie found non-carpeted places on the floor during the hottest part of the day.

Our friend, Tracy, had mentioned the “bowl full of stars” at night, so we stayed out past sunset to see that – and another WOW! was exclaimed!

Once the install was complete, Jim & Janet invited us to follow along with them on a Jeep road. Bill was confident the CRV would be okay, since it is all-wheel drive.

Following Jim & Janet

We came upon a camp of mostly young men, about 8 miles in. They had some pretty hard-core set-ups right on the edge of a cove off the main part of Lake Powell. The low 90’s temps had some of them swimming to cool off.

Here’s a short video of our ride:

Several hours of fun later, we went back to camp to check on Callie and get freshened up. Jim & Janet wanted to take us to dinner at a local BBQ place, Big Johns Texas BBQ, to thank Bill for a great install.

They had driven by and caught a whiff of the smoke coming from their HUGE outside smokers and thought it was worth a try. TripAdvisor confirmed that it was highly rated, number 2 out of 61 places to eat in Page. Big John’s lived up to its reputation and we enjoyed a delicious meal!

The following day, Jim & Janet headed home. It was great meeting you guys – thanks again for the wonderful day! Hope our paths cross again someday!

We got up early one morning, I was having some insomnia and took advantage of it to see a Lake Powell sunrise. It was very nice but not an Atlantic Ocean sunrise – those are my favorite! Since we were up , we figured we would go hike and see the world famous Horseshoe Bend, before it got too hot. We were in the parking lot by 8am – I know, right? That’s EARLY for me!

So peaceful and pretty!

The views were breathtaking! I was way to nervous to get too close to the edge, but there were others who just walked right up and looked over! Then, they would turn their backs to the edge to take a selfie! I had to walk away – I think they are nuts!

This hill is a lot steeper than it looks in this pic.

Later that day, we took a tour of the Glen Canyon Dam. It’s a very impressive structure! It was built between 1956 and 1966 and is 710 feet high. It holds back Lake Powell and creates up to 4,700 GW of electricity per year, serving 7 states. Lake Powell is a huge recreation area.

Our Antelope Canyon tour had been on my bucket list for quite some time. I have to say that the slot canyon itself was amazing and beautiful – and I got some great shots to prove it – but the tour was very rushed. I had been warned about that, but seriously, they need to figure out a different system. Our friends, Steven & Linda, took the same tour we did, but Steven, not satisfied with the ability to take the photos he wanted, also took the separate “Photographers Tour.” There were people taking that tour while we were there also, two groups I think, and while they weren’t as rushed, it still felt like no one had time to just look and take it all in.

Waiting to go in.

Since we had made the decision to stay at Lone Rock, and not rush to Kanab before Jacob Lake, we had time for just chilling out and taking care of some needed stuff.

I finally got the old blog name off the front of the cap. The gold color had faded really bad and couldn’t be seen easily anymore. So, I got it off and thoroughly cleaned the area, and Bill put the new one on. Much better!

Getting the old letters off.

While up on the ladder putting the letters on, Bill saw how badly the rest of the cap needed to be washed and the whole thing needed to be waxed. The next morning, before it got too hot, he did just that! See how nice it looks now?!

There is a fairly large marina right up from Lone Rock called Wahweap Marina. We took a walk on the docks one day to check out the huge houseboats.

The yellow thing in the upper left corner is a wench, which is used to control the length of the cables, which are adjusted according to the height of the lake, which can vary as much as 50 feet (more or less) a year.

Parked not far from us was a couple with a Montana 5th Wheel. Bill noticed the man fiddling around in his basement, so he walked over to see if he needed help with anything. Turns out he was just looking for something, so no problems. Next thing you know, we are having happy hour and exchanging stories. Bob & Gail are newbie full-timers and had lots of questions about stuff. We chatted until the stars started coming out!

Bob & Gail joined us for a pot-luck type meal of chicken wings (guess who made them!), a delicious sausage/cabbage/potato dish Gail made, and also baked beans from Gail. It was a wonderful evening getting to know each other better.

The next day we were both heading out, in opposite directions. Hope our paths cross with these two again!

Stay tuned: Jacob Lake – North Rim!

  1. Those are some of the most amazing pictures you’ve taken. The canyon walls are beautiful and the way light plays on them…wow.
Cantalope canyon is now on my bucket list.

    1. Thanks Linda! It was so hard to pic which to post, as I probably have triple the amount I posted – plus Bill took a bunch also. ps: it’s Antelope Canyon! LOL!

  2. Did you mean up to 4,700 GW ‘hr’s’ of electricity per year at the dam?? Those pictures are super!!

    1. Thanks!
Here’s what I got off Wikipedia:
      Annual generation: 4,717 GWh

  3. You pictures of the slot canyons are beautiful! We took one tour when we were there and cannot wait to get back to experience more of the tours.

    1. Thanks! Trouble with getting a tour is they fill up so fast! We literally lucked out and got the last two tickets for the time frame we were going to be there! And – it was for a good time of day – when the sun was high in the sky!

  4. I think you did a great job capturing the light shafts in Antelope Canyon. It’s pretty challenging with the extreme lights and darks. Is this not the best place ever??

    1. Thanks Steven! I did really enjoy the Canyon – hope to do the lower one day!

  5. Lone Rock is a favourite of ours…so much to see and do in the area. Great pics!

  6. WOW. That is all I can say. Your pictures are beautiful. I can’t say it enough , we can’t wait till we are out there exploring. Our dog is like Callie, likes the cool floor on hot days. Have a great week. Safe travels to you and Bill.

  7. We are planning on traveling from St. George to page in late October what is the best route to take.

    1. We went up 15N to 9 (through Hurricane) to 59 to 389 (Colorado City then Fredonia) to 89A (Kanab) to 89 into Page. I’m not sure of weather in that area in late October, so I’d check that if I were you. The route is gorgeous as you are driving through a lot of Grand Staircase – Escalante National Monument. Have a great trip and let me know how it goes!

  8. Excellent read, I just passed this onto a friend who was doing a little research on that. And he actually bought me lunch since I found it for him smile So let me rephrase that: Thanks for lunch!
