Grand Canyon – North Rim

As much as we loved Page and all we did there, we were very excited about the next stop, Jacob Lake, to see the North Rim.

Years ago, back in 2010, we took an extended vacation in our Class C Motorhome. Our main destination on that trip was the Grand Canyon, the South Rim, which is where most people go. The South Rim is more easily accessible and is open year-round, whereas the North Rim, being at a much higher elevation, closes for the winter. That trip was where the first “seeds” of what would become our full-time RV lifestyle were planted.

The drive to Jacob Lake, we were told, would be amazing, with views of Marble Canyon and Vermillion Cliffs along the way. They did not disappoint!

Loved driving through the red rock canyon.

While a lot of the sites at Jacob Lake Campground were quite shaded, luckily ours had plenty of open sky for our solar. We had filled up with water at the Chevron across the street, and while we were there we picked up two bundles of wood for a campfire.

Set-up was quick and easy since the site was level and there weren’t any hook-ups to deal with. We wasted no time in heading into the National Park to get our first glimpse of the canyon and get the lay of the land, so we could make the most of our one full day.

We were out fairly early, as we had lots of trails we wanted to hike. I’ll let the pictures show you.

The colors are so amazing!
Love the contrast of the trees, canyon and sky.
As the sun went down, the colors change.
Bill & I love checking out the National Park lodges.

This one just looks like it goes on forever.

Love the gnarly trees!

Sun was really getting low in this one.

Back at camp, Bill started a fire and we decided to cook some hot dogs over it. Cooking the hot dogs like that made us think of our friends, Tina, Monique, Dan, Will and others back in New Jersey.

Bill took this short video that shows the expanse of the Canyon a little better than just pics. Check it out:

    1. Try to get to both sides – they are similar yet different! You guys will love it! We hope to spend more time someday – perhaps hike down one side and up the other – or raft down the canyon – that sounds more fun!

  1. The views from the North Rim are spectacular in the morning or afternoon sun. The shadows you’ve captured really show the depth of the canyon while highlighting the spires and cliffs.

    1. Thanks Jeff! I was at the right place at the right time! It’s impossible to get a bad pic!

  2. Kelly, beautiful. Love the pictures. That is very high on our bucket list. I couldn’t get the video to work. Will keep trying. Safe travels.

  3. Wow! You had such lovely weather, and the photos are gorgeous! I can’t wait to see them on my computer. I can tell they are great on my phone, but they are the size of a saltine. I had to skip the north rim because it was “still winter.”

    1. That’s the word Kim – WOW! We were there only a week after it opened for the season!

  4. What great photos 😎
But as great as they are, you know that they are not as great as being there.
Every time I have stood and looked out over the canyon it just takes your breath away 😎
It is just such great place!!

  5. We have yet to visit the Grand Canyon but after reading your experience and seeing your pictures we are even more excited about eventually getting there!
