Kremmling CO

Our next destination after Dillon was supposed to be Leadville. We had heard great things about it and we had even driven the 35 miles down there with the car to check out the boondocking sites and campgrounds we had been told about.  We liked what we saw well enough, but to be honest, neither of us felt like going there. After what happened in Dillon, we (mostly me) wanted to hunker down and just chill. Just wasn’t up for figuring out a new place, especially when it was the the opposite direction of where we needed to be for the next install. I placed a call to Wolford Campground to see if it would be okay for us to arrive early, and thankfully, they said “Come on in!”

We had been near Kremmling before, when boondocking at Williams Fork Reservoir. We had originally hoped to find a nice boondock spot closer to Steamboat Springs, but after a day of exploring, none we found would work for all our needs. We drove into and chose Wolford Campground, right on Wolford Reservoir. It shows up on Allstays as an independent campground, but after arriving we learned that it is part of Denver River District.

One concern I had initially when we arrived was there was a wildfire not far from the campground.  It was about 18 miles “as the crow flies.” We could see the smoke for a couple of days in the distance. The camphost told Bill not to worry, as they give plenty of notice if we needed to leave. I looked up and found a website that kept us updated on how large the fire was, what percent contained it was, how many people were fighting it and which direction it was going. Considering we had others joining us, I kept a close watch when we first arrived.

It was a beautiful location! Clients for Bill’s next install, then David & Sharon, joined us. Jo & Ben came for a few days, and we were all hoping Cori & Greg would be able to make it as well.

As everyone arrived, they loved the views as much as we did. Our clients were brand new to full-timing. Their family of three, plus a dog and a cat, were still learning about their Airstream, and I made some suggestions for saving on water consumption, since there wasn’t water on site.

With some help from David, the install was done pretty quickly – leaving plenty of time for fun stuff!

Thankfully, we had some rain, which helped get the fire under control, which helped me not watch it all the time.

Cori & Greg, along with the adorable pup, Hobie, finally arrived and our group was complete.  Due to personal issues, they were delayed in leaving Texas, but were happy to be able to come join us!

Shockingly, we were allowed to have campfires! Yes, even though there was a wildfire less than 20 miles away. How weird is that? Someone had picked up ingredients for s’mores, and they were good! I don’t even remember the last time I had a s’more, might have been Texas! We – mostly David – were extra careful in making sure the fires we had were completely out before going in for the night.

One of the fun things we did was spend a day in Steamboat Springs. What a great town – with awesome shops and restaurants! We did have to drive up there to pick solar items at the UPS store.

As you can tell, we very much enjoyed Wolford Reservoir and Campground. It was a great balance of working, relaxing and friend fun!

    1. It’s a great location – you might like some of the boondock spots – only a few have cell though

  1. I had to read this one a couple times – trying to figure out why Bill would need help! He appears to be able to do most anything, and a bit of help is for conversation, but slows the project down 🙂
What a beautiful campsite to share with friends.

    1. Hi Jeff! I think it’s fair to say Bill doesn’t “need” the help – ha! But – David wants to learn more about solar and an extra pair of hands can be nice to have – especially when with friends and there is fun to be had!

  2. We went to Cody Wyoming last year, I loved it there. I think you are late getting to see a rodeo, but that was probably my favorite thing to do there! 😁

    1. We did see a rodeo – the last “nightly” one! We enjoyed it – but – like a circus – it’s prob not something I would do again.

  3. So glad that you’ve started ringing yourselves dry from Dillon and are moving on!! Love hearing about everyone getting back together! Looking forward to more!

  4. If you are interested in a beautiful “destination” (for thousands of years) campground, check out Medicine Lodge (Little BigHorns). Not sure when the snow starts to fall in that area.
