Cody WY

When leaving Colorado, our next destination was Cody, WY – a completely new place for us! We drove north on Rt 40, turning right toward Walden, on Rt 14. We decided not to tackle Rabbit Ears Pass with our rig. Going down into Steamboat Springs there is a 7% downhill grade for 7 miles, and since it didn’t add many miles, we opted for the flatter route.

Are we going to make it?

After a quick overnight at the Walmart in Riverton, we caught up with our friends, Steven & Linda (of The Chouters) at Buffalo Bill State Park, North Fork Campground. Hugs were exchanged all around and then Bill quickly got us parked in the pull-through site.

While enjoying happy hour after we set up, we planned our attack for the following week. Steven & Linda had spent significant time in Cody over the years, and we trusted them to show us the best stuff!

I do believe a photo tour is in order!

First up: Our first time in Yellowstone National Park! One of our biggest bucket list places!

First glimpse of Yellowstone Lake
First Bison!
Old Faithful was amazing, although a bit shy this time
gorgeous water in this hot spring
this hot spring was hotter than the other – boiling hot!
minerals color the ground near the springs
Lodge at Old Faithful – looks like it should be featured in a Steven King movie!
one of the many amazing waterfalls we saw in the park

We had a big ending to our first day in the park – there was a herd of bison across the river and two of them swam across the river! They climbed out right in front of us! I had no idea the awkwardly shaped animals with HUGE bodies and short legs could swim! Check out the short recording – you can see his nose above the water.

The following day, our group had a quiet day in the campground, but after dinner our evening was spent at the Buffalo Bill Cody Stampede Rodeo! Bill and I had never been to a rodeo before, so we weren’t sure exactly what to expect. We watched the nightly flag presentation, bull riding, saddle bronc riding, and barrel racing.

Our last big stop in the area was touring the Buffalo Bill Center of the West. It’s a very well done museum, explaining the way things were during Bill Cody’s time.

Loved this painting – hadn’t seen this place in person yet
I had no idea Buffalo Bill had gone to England
Recreation of a wagon

  1. Great pictures! That is one huge bison. I always love your ice cream photos too. The inside of the wagon looks a lot like the inside of the old “canned hams”.

    1. Thanks Sue! I like to think of the wagon as the first RV, only not quite. While we take the road less traveled – the pioneers created new roads! That’s brave!

  2. We really loved Yellowstone. Didn’t make it over to Cody, on the list for someday. Have my Dad’s antique Winchester rifle that I want to take to the museum. You guys are having fun!

  3. Great pictures Kelly. Glad you are having a wonderful time. Yellowstone is high on our bucket list as well. Have a great week.
