Garner State Park TX

I mentioned at the end of my previous post that we were headed somewhere new when we left out of Cori & Greg’s. That new place was Garner State Park. Our friends Linda & Rick were volunteering there! Cori & Greg had visited there and said it was a very nice park right on a river. We were hoping it wasn’t as low as the Guadalupe.

It was a fairly short drive day, about 130 miles, and the route I had chosen took us through San Antonio. The weather was warm and sunny. I was looking forward to some BFF time!

Once we arrived, after a small GPS snafu, Linda met us at the main check-in area. I went inside and got us checked in; then Linda, in her golf cart, led the way to our site. The park is very large and has 3 different camping loops. Thankfully, and completely coincidently, Linda & Rick were assigned and parked in the same loop I choose for our stay. Gotta love it when things work out like that!

Now for the downside – the site I choose was not really big enough. Well that’s not entirely true – it was BIG enough but there was a tree in the way in our truck swing area, AND low branches on the site. So, we were moved even closer to Linda & Rick in one of their “emergency sites” which are only used when a situation like ours happens. We were grateful for all the help getting us parked in a perfect site!

.

Once we were parked, we exchanged hugs all around! It had been several months since Linda stopped to see us on her way to NJ last summer, and I don’t even remember when we saw Rick last – so that means too long! Chatting on the phone, or via Facebook messenger isn’t the same!

Loved their new sign!

We enjoyed a great week, hiking, floating on the Frio River, (and while lower than usual, there was still plenty of water), game playing, and cooking together. Red & Pam drove down from Junction one day to spend an afternoon with us!

Linda and I have been BFF’s for over 30 years.
Bill making Anawan work for her treats.
Such a good girl!
Guess what we are making?
Another clue.
Ok – I’ll tell you – put this together with the shrimp and we enjoyed delicious Shrimp and Grits! The recipe was slightly different than the one I usually make – love trying different interpretations of recipes.
Another day Bill smoked a brisket, and yes, it takes most of the day!
Perfect floating day.
Linda is an expert floater, having gained over 20 years experience living in a lake community.
We all enjoyed the cool water.
Hiking to the top of Mt Baldy took the better part of a day to get to the top and back down.
I enjoy hikes that have a reward at the top!
.
Beautiful views!
This was taken after I slid down the hill. I was the only one to take a tumble, but it wasn’t too bad.
The evenings cooled off enough to have a fire.
Playing dominos – can’t remember the name of it.
I think it was a version of Rummikub, but I’m not sure.
It was so nice that Red & Pam could drive down and see us for an afternoon. Great to see you guys!

  1. I’m so glad that it worked for us all to get together. It had been way too long!
    And I agree, it’s a beautiful area.

    1. Thanks again for driving down to see us! We loved spending the afternoon with you guys!

  2. You scheduled yourself into a beautiful state park, and close to friends is a big plus. And then more company makes it special.
A hike with a reward indeed is best. Gotta have a goal

    1. Bill is so much better than me about getting out and getting steps in. I get bored so a reward makes it worthwhile!

  3. That looks like a nice park! We have looked at that park to volunteer at. How did your friends like it? Were you able to get any cell service there? Supposedly ATT is only available in 2 areas, nothing else. How are the host sites?

So glad you got to meet up with Pam and Red. We know them from Grand Design rallies. Volunteered for them and miss seeing them!

    1. Hi Julie! My friends enjoyed their time at Garner! Their site was awesome! They did 2 months. We had 0 (zero) Verizon signal but a little bit on our TMobile hot spot. They have wifi at the laundry area and store(s) that worked well but nothing at the sites.
