Buh Bye Pahrump – Hello St George!

I was SO ready to move on from Pahrump when we lifted our jacks to head out. Our next destination was St George, UT.

We didn’t have many miles to cover, but going through Las Vegas was part of the journey. I tried to route us to skirt around the edge of the city, which has lots of construction on I 15. I thought I had checked the route, but I misunderstood the exit and we ended up exactly where I didn’t want to be. Thankfully the fix wasn’t too bad and we were on the right path reasonably quickly. Travel days stress me out. UGH! I try to focus on the new place we will be arriving to, and that helps. Bill and I decided we will double check routing together before we leave, so we each see the expected road names and directions.

Once we were past Vegas, it was smooth sailing up to St George, and gorgeous views all around!

Our friends, Steven & Linda, had suggested the Elks Lodge in St George, and we were happy to follow their recommendation. Once we arrived, it was easy to understand why they liked it. The views were amazing! We parked in the last available site and went inside to check-in with the bartender. The lodge members, as always, were friendly and welcoming. We enjoyed a couple of drinks, pizza and a chicken hot pocket type thing before going home for some relaxing TV time before bed.

Since we were only spending one full day in St George, I asked Linda for her suggestion of what could we do. A visit to Zion National Park, about one hour away, was brought up, but she also mentioned how bad the crowds would probably be. Frankly, I was not up for crowds. I was needing peace and quiet time with my man. Her next idea was right in St George, Snow Canyon State Park. Done! Decision made!

What a great day it turned out to be! Sunny skies with white puffy clouds, temps that were not too hot – perfect! Since it was so close by, we were able to not rush in the morning, instead leisurely having our morning coffee and breakfast before leaving. Our arrival at Snow Canyon was about 11:30am.

After paying the day fee of $6, we drove the whole park road before stopping at the Visitor Center. We talked to the ranger and she told us some specifics on the hikes that sounded good on the map.

We walked around the campground, as it was right there next to the Visitor Center, just to check it out. We figured maybe we would stay there next time we are in the area, since it was so nice. Well, I’m glad we looked closer, since so many of the sites were so small! Several rigs couldn’t even open their slides! Even the camphost didn’t have their slides fully deployed! Bill measured by walking the width (he’s measured his foot in his sneaker and it’s almost exactly 12″) and the sites were only 11′ wide! We need a minimum of 13″ to fully open our slides! So, we will not ever be staying in Snow Canyon State Park Campground. Good thing the Elks is awesome and close by!

Our first hike was the Lava Tube Trail. It wasn’t very long at about 2.3 miles out/back and is labeled as moderate. The highlights include seeing lava tubes. We saw that people, people younger than us, had climbed down to actually get into the tubes, but neither Bill nor I felt the need to do that. We had walked in lava tubes on our honeymoon in Hawaii, we decided to assume these lava tubes wouldn’t be much different.

I’ve said it before, but I LOVE hikes that have a nice reward at the end, and the Lava Tube Trail did not disappoint.

Since we had plenty of day left upon returning to the car, we choose to hike the Whiterocks Trail. I love hikes that have a reward!

We thoroughly enjoyed our day in Snow Canyon!

Later that evening, we went back into the lodge for dinner. The views were wonderful as we ate. The food was ok – a great value, especially since we didn’t have to cook after being out at the State Park all day!

  1. I think that is one of my favorite lodges. The views are spectacular without leaving your rig! Good value, too! It’s good to be an Elk! 🙂 Great photos in Snow Canyon!

    1. I agree – other lodge locations will be compared to this one! Thanks!

    1. Bill and I said the same thing – what were they thinking? There are some more secluded looking sites – but they, while being long, looked very narrow also. It’s a shame really because the surroundings are amazing!

  2. Great photos of another very pretty area! Will have to add this place to our list too….

    1. Thanks Pam! The list is always growing longer isn’t it? I know mine is!

  3. beautiful area. Have not been to St. George so you gave us a tour. How does one use the Elks Lodge sites? Membership ? We use the military sites as often as we can, Too.

    1. Hi Carol! Yes – we are Elks members! Pretty much anyone can join – but there is a process that varies some at each lodge. We have heard military sites are great, but we aren’t eligible to use them.

  4. Great pictures Kelly. We would love to belong to the Elks after reading a lot of you reviews and post about them. Still trying to find someone in our area that belongs. Hope everything else is going well for you and Bill. Have a good week. We just got from an extra long weekend camping and then we are off again headed out Friday. I love the short work weeks. LOL
    Take care and safe travels
    Chris

    1. We can be your sponsors when you decide to join – you just need our info. Go to your locale lodge and apply. It’s easy. Some lodges are better than others but it’s nicer than Walmart for overnights and sometimes longer – especially if you plan to arrive earlier in the day. Glad you are getting out for the weekends! That’s awesome! Hugs to you and Frank!
