Once again, we had a short drive day, leaving out of Boulder Elks and arriving at Westminster Elks in less than an hour. This is one great advantage to staying in one area.
The Westminster Elks Lodge site have more of a campground feel than Boulder Elks. Some sites are just electric, some have 30amp and water, some 50amp and water; some are FHU. Sadly, there isn’t a dump station, but with enough hose, the CG host will let you dump using their site, or when someone is leaving out of a FHU site, others can take turns using that site to dump, which is what most will do. Its a weird system for sure, but works ok. While there isn’t a dump station very close by, there is one at a Cabela’s (free) about 14 miles away, and also at JeffCo Fairgrounds ($20 fee), which is about the same distance, but in a different direction.
.
When we arrived, there were a couple of sites for us to choose from, none of them FHU, so we chose one with 30amp and water, with a big tree for partial shade. It was across from their big grass area, so no one directly across from us. Bill got us parked and a little bit later in the afternoon, we walked down to check out the lodge.
Bill’s membership card didn’t work at the door (sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn’t), so we got buzzed in. We relaxed with a couple of drinks and chatted with the bartender. We also picked up a calendar with the goings-on for while we were there.
The usual way it works when we have an install is the clients come to where we are staying, which makes it easy for us. This install was an exception to that rule. You may recall, we were supposed to have an install in Colorado Springs, immediately following the Heartland Owners Rally, staying as guests on the Air Force Base. Instead, we stayed at the Elks there and toured around seeing the sites. The reason the install didn’t happen at that time was the client’s wife suffered a significant injury and they weren’t able to travel to Colorado and meet up with us. At first, we weren’t sure the install would happen at all, but she was able to be relocated to a rehab in Denver. The husband parked his coach at a CG about 4 miles from the rehab so he could easily spend his days with her there. Considering all this, we didn’t want to ask him to move to a different place, so we traveled the half hour each way to do the install at his location. We actually could have stayed in the same CG, but at $55 a night, we opted for the commute. The Elks was $16 per night, so even considering the fuel costs, that was a huge savings for us.
I helped Bill as much as I could, helping put together panels, pulling wire, etc. I also brought my laptop and worked on the blog and other things. Our client also generously shared some of his extensive TV Show and Movie collection with us. On our last day, he took us to lunch at a very good Mexican place. Thanks David!
Bill also had an inverter install while we were at Westminster Elks. This one was also an exception to the rule since it was in storage. Considering that the Elks was full (so the client couldn’t come stay with us there) and further considering how expensive all CG’s in the area are, he opted again to drive to the client. Another consideration in that decision was that it was a one to one and a half day job.
Thankfully, both installs went fairly smoothly and there are now two more happy RV Solar Solutions clients!
We spent a few happy hours in the lodge, and enjoyed their drink and food specials. Everyone we met was very welcoming! We sure do love being Elks!
The highlight of our time at Westminster Elks was we got to see Quynn & Megan again! They came over and had dinner with us one evening, and another we joined them for an outdoor concert and picnic, making up for not seeing them on the Fourth of July. (I am happy to report Megan’s Aunt is doing better) The band was called “That 80’s Band” and they played an excellent variety of 80’s hits, including Bon Jovi, U2, Michael Jackson and Cyndy Lauper. What a great evening!

Bill is so accommodating when it makes sense. That is great and will go a long way in good PR.
The Elks looks like a great value!
Sometimes you’ve gotta do what you’ve gotta do! We were happy to help out our clients, as you said, when it makes sense – just would be impossible to do it for everyone. Our life would no longer be our own!
We do love being part of the Elks organization – and love that their main focus is veterans.
Great jobs intermixing fun with work, the outdoor concert looked like a blast!
We are liking the work/play combo for sure! There are free outdoor concerts like that all over the front range – they are so much fun! Especially with family/friends!
Are solar panels being used on RVs as well as mobile homes? I have seen several homes in our area of Denver that use them but never an RV – super cool!
Thanks for reading! Lot of RVers have solar on their roofs, some use “suitcase” type panels, so camping “off-grid” is an option.
