Stillwater Pass

As I mentioned in the previous post, Sharon & David had moved ahead of us, about 25 miles away, and we took them up on the offer to join them. The clock struck noon as we left our site on the peninsula in the rear view mirror. After a quick stop in Granby to use the dump station and refill the fresh tank, we joined our friends at Stillwater Pass.

The site they chose afforded us a wonderful view of mountains, with a peek-a-boo view of Grand Lake. The spot on the mountain also allowed us to enjoy watching the many hummingbirds that call the area home. Sharon had two feeders out when we arrived, and Bill, noticing how much I loved watching them, got me one at the local hardware store to hang on one of our windows. I, along with Callie, was very appreciative of the unexpected gift! Thanks Babe!

The town of Grand Lake borders Rocky Mountain National Park. On the other side of Trail Ridge Road is Estes Park. Plenty of places to explore! How about I show you in pics?!

David & Sharon

Sharon and I went on a girls-night-out one evening. We saw a play, The Full Monty, at the Rocky Mountain Repertory Theater. It was a fun evening!

Excellent play!
love the small community plays – we were in the last row and it was still a great seat!

We decided we wanted to see more of Rocky Mountain National Park. Sharon & David had taken a ride over to Estes Park and took a detour on Old Fall River Rd. We left early one morning to follow their footsteps! The morning started out with gorgeous weather.  We stopped at several pull-outs for pics, loving every moment! We parked in Estes Park, on the hunt for a couple of t-shirts and lunch!

Mission accomplished, we drove back into the park, as some clouds were forming. We didn’t think much of it, since it seems its a normal occurrence that clouds form around the mountains in the later afternoon. Not long into the detour on Old Fall River Rd, it started raining, then for a very short time, it hailed.  Thankfully, the hail was small, and didn’t cause any damage. Made for an interesting drive though, as the road is not paved. There were lots of switchback turns, we saw a big dually truck in front of us have to do a k-turn to get around 2 of them! Good thing the road is one-way only! Made me glad to have my all-wheel drive car.

Our final morning at Stillwater Pass, the four of us treated ourselves to a great breakfast at the Grand Lake Lodge. It was a reasonably priced buffet and delicious Bloody Mary’s and Mimosa’s. Best part though was the view!  The lodge itself is so cool! Someday, I’d like to stay in one of the National Park lodges – each we’ve visited has it’s own unique features!  After eating, we walked around, checking out the details. We ended up in the game room; Bill and David enjoyed a round of pool and also ping-pong. There is a breathtaking wedding area outside, and a room that is perfect for a reception.

The following morning, we left our mountaintop spot, heading to higher elevation in Dillon. We were staying in different campgrounds, on opposite sides of the lake. Check back next week to read all about our time there – it will be a doozy – and not in a good way.

  1. Congrats on completing/surviving the Old River Road in the rain/hail! However that can be a beautiful in the right (dry/uncrowded) conditions. When our son lived near Ft Collins his wedding was held in Estes Park, it was always been a fun day trip now it has more meaning. Were there any elk in town?

    1. Hi Jeff! There weren’t but a few Elk, less than we’ve seen in the past. What a beautiful place to get married! The drive on Old River Road was interesting for sure!

  2. Very cool that you were able to hang out with David and Sharon, we have STILL yet to meet them! Beautiful campling spot, we will have to get to that area one day.
