Helping a Friend Prepare for Full-Timing

I know it’s been a while since I’ve posted. Bill has been keeping busy installing and I have Nani duties to attend to. Spring had finally arrived and we enjoyed warmer days. Unfortunately, a lot of those warmer days were also rainy, no fun when installs are a mostly outside job!

Due to a late cancellation (actually a postponement), we found ourselves with some unexpected time-off. We decided to make the most of it by heading to North Jersey, to see our friend, Linda.

Linda and I met almost 30 years ago, over a sales rack at a Kids R Us. I was about 6 months pregnant with my son; my 14 month old daughter was with my Mom. Linda had her 14 month old daughter in her cart, and I couldn’t help but notice her. She could have been my Michelle’s sister! Blonde hair and blue eyes, and very chatty. I asked “How old is your daughter?” “Fourteen months” was the reply. The conversation grew from there and next thing you know, we are exchanging info. Linda had invited me to a “play group” and not having any friends with kids, I happily accepted.

The play group didn’t last, but our friendship did, and grew as our girls did. I had Billy, and Linda was one of my “sisters” which gained her access to see the baby at the hospital. Two years later I was her “sister” when she had her son, Jimmy.

We’ve remained close since, celebrating the kids milestones together, sharing tears, becoming each other’s chosen family.

When Bill & I decided to begin this crazy new life called full-time RV’ing, no one was happier for us than Linda. She agreed it was like living a dream, and one she wished for herself one day.

Fast forward a few years, and Linda’s plan to become a full-time RVer is finally happening! She had decided she wanted a 5th Wheel, and began looking online. About that same time, our friends, Jo & Ben had decided to sell their truck/5er combo and settle down for awhile. It was meant to be! I got them in touch with each other, they worked out the details, and Linda owned a new home-on-wheels!

Bill explained to her the benefits of having solar, knowing she wants to boondock as much as possible. Knowing how much we’ve used ours, especially this past year, she agreed it was a good idea.

She would also need driving lessons. She had been using the truck, so get used to it on its own, but towing would be a completely new experience.

We arrived at her house with a list of things to accomplish: install solar, driving lessons, help decide what she needs to get, help decide what she can and cannot fit in her new-to-her much smaller home, and visit the campground she will move to when her house sells, and lastly, attend her Elk induction ceremony!

The week flew by, and I’m happy to say all boxes got checked! It was definitely hectic, but we even managed to get a walk around the lake in every morning! We are so excited for her!

The day we arrived was Jimmy’s birthday!
On one of our walks
Goose family
Driving lessons

Learning about the generator
Bill doing his solar thing
Bear walking through Linda’s driveway – about 15 feet from Bill!
Her gorgeous flowers!
Both homes –
We were excited to be there for her ceremony, especially since we were her sponsors!
Her favorite chairs all moved into her new dining area
Can’t forget her favorite pillows!
First time giving her new home a bath!

I think that wraps up our week in Jersey. I did say it was busy, didn’t I? We are so happy for Linda! If you ever see her out on the road – please say hello!

  1. Sounds like a great week with a friend. I am sure she appreciated all of your help. Here I go all the way to Alaska and pay a lot of money to see a bear, and we didn’t, and she had one right in her yard. LOL. You and Bill are such great people. Enjoy your weekend.

  2. How cool that she bought Jo & Ben’s complete set up. It’s great that she knows her new homes history. And it’s fantastic that you and Bill were there to teach her the ropes!

  3. Fun time sharing your experience/knowledge/skills with friends. I’m sure you’ll meet again on the road, and perhaps provide some answers to the questions that have come up during the learning curve.

    1. We are always looking to “pay it forward” – especially to those we love!

  4. How exciting for Linda, we still remember the days leading up to the day we hit the road, she will love this new adventure!

  5. How exciting for her! And going solo in such a big rig? Cudos!! Nice if you guys to show her the ropes. I’m sure it was sporeciated!

    1. She was originally looking in the 30’-32’ range, but ultimately decided an extra 3’ wasn’t that big a deal – that, and knowing the full history of the rig and that it was well-cared for was worth it. And – yes – she is very appreciative! But that’s what friends are for!

  6. The Arctic Fox is a well built trailer. I am sure Linda will enjoy it. We have helped a few friends through the transition to this alternative lifestyle and it has been gratifying each time. It is like having kids all over the country.

    1. The fact that the 5er is a well built one also played into why we felt it was a good deal for her. We are very much enjoying helping her – her excitement is contagious! Reminds us of our early beginnings, when you don’t even know what you don’t know.

  7. You two are more like family to me than friends. And when it comes to getting ready to begin this new path in my life you are most definitely the wind beneath my wings.
I am so grateful for all the help and guidance.
    I love you both.
And I can’t wait to get on the road!!

  8. What a great start for the fulltiming dream. Looks like she has a lot of house to downsize from 🙂

Hope we get a chance to meet Linda on the road!

    1. She is off to an excellent start! She began the process of downsizing 2 years ago, and has made amazing progress! I’d love for her to meet you guys!
