Family and Friends in Somerset PA

It feels like forever since I’ve sat and typed up a post – probably because it has been! I last wrote about our trip to NJ and what a great time we had there!

After our return to Somerset, we had lots of time with our granddaughters, which we love. There was plenty of puzzles completed, plenty of pool time and puddles splashed in, and we also enjoyed baking cookies and pumpkin bread!

taking one of many walks
picking berries
visiting the cows – I’m not sure who was more curious – the girls or the cows
the girls liked the little pool – but LOVED the BIG pool!
they thought the bee covered in pollen was very cool – and so did I
It was not easy keeping them from chasing the butterflies
saying hello to the geese family
first time on the hayride
Freya loved to look up and see the clouds – she’d say “LOOK NANA!”
they both love puzzles – of course Freya is better at them – for now at least
haircut day
Arwen needed a little extra help keeping still

Before it starts to feel like this blog is only about my granddaughters, let me fill you in on the other things we had going on!

Jo & Ben came and visited with us for a few days after Ben finished up his travel nurse contract in Charlottesville, VA. This was their second year in a row returning to that area. Jo (who retired from nursing) took on a volunteer gig at Sherando National Forest Campground. The position came with a free site with FHU’s, so was a great way for them to save a few $$$. Sadly, we didn’t get any pics of the four of us, but we hung out, cooked together and one day visited Mountain Craft Days, which is a local festival of sorts.

Watching this lady made me think of my friend Tracy, who is learning how to be a potter.
Cabin at Mountain Craft Days,
I’ve seen bee hives before, but never this close up while they were open. You can see the Queen – she’s the one with the red on her back – she looks different than the others, who are worker bees.
This company was using that very small still to make botanicals.
Jimmy Buffet night at Hickory Hollow.
Beautiful sunset at the campground.
Another enjoyable evening at Hickory Hollow.
Baking chocolate chip cookies with my girls. They were yummy!

One evening we stopped to see the car show that was happening at the Chevy dealer. For such a small local show, they had a lot of great cars to look at!

LOVE old muscle cars! Bill’s sister had one of these back in the day, except hers was a rag top! This is a ’67 or ’68 Camaro.
My fav – Bill used to have one but different color. I’d prefer the whole car be red – and a convertible! This is a ’68 Mustang.
Not 100% sure but we think this is a late 60’s/early 70’s Nova – does anyone out there know? (we knew that day but don’t remember and pic doesn’t show the emblem)
The lady I used to babysit for back in the day had one of these, same color too – hers was a T top. Early 70’s Firebird.

We enjoyed a stopover visit from my BFF, Linda. She stopped on her way to see her son. It is always good to spend time with her.

Great day spent in Ohiopyle State Park.
Water was high.
Cucumber Falls trail.
No hats needed on this trail
Fall colors starting to show themselves.
Teaching the girls about shadows.

Hickory Hollow has trick or treating every weekend in October, which was awesome because we got to take the girls before we left! They were so cute as you can see in the pic below. I figured out how to cover their faces with a sticker so you can see. It was a wonderful way to spend a beautiful fall afternoon!

Pulling out to head south.

  1. Good to finally hear from you! The time spent with the family is always precious.
Nice muscle car show, we had a Mustang convertible but had to spend more time working on it than driving it. Such a lemon 🙂
Trick/Treat every weekend? That should aa sweet tooth satisfied.

    1. Good to hear from you Jeff! Bill spent quite a bit of time working on his ‘68 Mustang when he owned it and eventually “upgraded” to a Chevette Scooter! Ha! But that little car drove and drove! We all satisfied our sweet tooth ok trick or treat day!

  2. Looks like lots of quality time was had with the grandkids. Those were some nice looking rides. Merry Christmas and all the best in 2024!

    1. We enjoyed every single minute with the girls! We love to happen upon little things like the car show! Merry Christmas to you both!

  3. I’m pretty sure the red car with the white hood stripe in a Chevelle SS and they usually came with a 396 big block V8.

  4. I too was away for quite a while so I know how challenging it is to get caught up! Fun to see all the good times you had with family and friends. The grands are getting so big, as they all seem to do, and I know how much you love spending time with them.

    1. We had an amazing summer with Freya and Arwen! They are just so fun to be around! While I do love my blog – it can take a backseat to other things and then take me awhile to catch up on!
