We lifted our jacks and began our journey south on a cool fall day. We had said our “see you soon’s!” to the girls the day before. It was not easy.
Since the trip from Somerset PA to Nags Head is too long for one day, we stopped at the Cabela’s in Henrico, VA. We stayed for 2 nights and enjoyed a visit with Bill’s younger sister Maretta. She chose an old fashioned diner for dinner and it was yummy! We stocked up at Costco and Wegmans.
One of our happy places, OBX, was in the GPS and our fuel/gas tanks were full when we continued southeast toward the ocean. We’ve traveled this route several times so it was very familiar. Thankfully the drive was uneventful and we arrived in Nags Head in the early afternoon. We used the dump station in the marina to empty our grey and black tanks and filled our fresh tank before entering the campground across the street. Bill got us backed in and we set up quickly.
We were just relaxing when we heard a truck that sounded like Jo & Ben, but when we looked outside, the truck had a truck camper on it – it wasn’t towing their 5th wheel. Bill and I went out to tell them they were backing into the wrong site and then we noticed it was them! They had traded in their Grand Design 5th wheel for a Northern Light truck camper! They had literally picked it up 3 days before leaving to join us.
We had 2 weeks of meals, seeing the sites, and just hanging out enjoying the area. Bill and I have been there several times but always love returning; Jo & Ben had been there years ago for a quick visit and were looking forward to spending more time there.
A day at Wright Brothers taught us about the early days of flight.
.
Since Jockeys Ridge is nearby, we stopped there next.
Another day of exploring included a stop at Chicamacomico Lifesaving Station.
I was disappointed that Bodie Island Lighthouse wasn’t open for climbing, but we enjoyed the walking trails.
Since Jo & Ben hadn’t been to the northern part of OBX – a drive to that area was added to the schedule.
We took a tour of the Whalehead Club. They do not allow people to take pictures inside the house but it was a beautiful house.
.
We had seen billboards about a Seafood Festival so we decided to check it out.
The aquarium never disappoints!
A trip to OBX isn’t complete without spending a day in Ocracoke. The only pics we took were on the ferry.
We also found time to visit Pea Island, which is a sanctuary and stopping place for many bird species.
Bill and Ben went out to try and catch some fish a couple of times, with little/no success. But you know what they say – a bad day at fishing is better than a good day at work!
Below are some of my fav beach and sun shots.
Our two weeks in OBX flew by as always. We love our stays at Oregon Inlet Campground. If it weren’t for the two week limit, we’d surely stay longer.

Good views, good eats good friends!
We totally hit the trifecta!
Our only trip to OBX was, to make it to Kitty Hawk, part of our Wright Brothers adventure. I now we left a lot undone, and you certainly have a compelling post as to why we should return!
There is so much to see and do, especially if you go in the summer months. We just love it!
Great review! Definitely going to look at making this trip. I’m curious, and I’m sure you’ve said somewhere, but do you tow the small SUV or do you drive it separately? I know “double” towing is a hot topic sometimes. We have a large 5th wheel but also travel with two German Shepherds, so I have to drive a separate vehicle behind the truck/RV.
Hi Terri! I drive my CRV separate, and have for the whole time we’ve been full-time, which is over 9 years now. We like keeping the local miles off the truck. We also travel with our kitty so she rides in the backseat on the car, with her crate strapped in. We aren’t interested in double-towing.
Looks like a great area for lots of interesting exploration. Great pics!
Safe travels!
We love all the things to do – and the vibe is great too!
Thanks for taking me back to one of our favorite places in the East! That first pic is exceptional. How fun to be there for the festival!!! Great to be in the area with lovely weather, good friends, and no crowds!
It’s one of our fav Back East places also! We had such a good couple of weeks!
Love it!
Thanks Eric!
