Where Have We Been?

Hello Readers! If you’ve been following us for any length of time, you know that I tend to be behind on my posts. I don’t mind a being a little behind, but then I will promise you and (more importantly) myself that I will keep up better. Then I’ll be “good” for awhile before falling off again. This time, I’m not making that promise. I will post when I feel able and do my best, but life happens and sometimes things (like this blog) take a back seat to what’s right in front of me.

When I left off last, I had published a 10 years on the road post (can find that here). Timeline wise, you last heard about our 2024 visit to NJ. (Read about that here) Since then there has been a lot going on and I’m going to do my best to catch you up quickly in this post.

Somerset PA

When we got back to Hickory Hollow after our NJ trip, we had a couple of installs and spent lots of time with our girls. We had sleep-overs, which were fun and exhausting at the same time.

The girls “cooking” for us

We took a side trip with Fantasy RV Tours for a large chunk of the month of September, but I’ll talk about that in a later post.

Halloween, and all the fun that comes with it came and went and the girls loved going trick or treating. We visited a corn maze and fall festival. We baked cookies and pumpkin bread.

Deb and Tim spent a few days at Hickory Hollow
Cindy and James came for a visit in between their volunteer gigs
Freya is in green, while Arwen is wearing the purple. They were both fairies.
First time in a corn maze.
not too bad – especially since I did it freehand.

Richmond VA

We lifted our jacks and headed south at the end of October, stopping in Richmond VA area to see Bill’s sister Maretta and her husband Rob. They had recently bought a new home, and we were excited for them and wanted the tour. What a great house they found for themselves, 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, great kitchen, dining, and living rooms. Really nice fenced yard for their dachshund, Roxy.

New Bern NC

Next stop was in New Bern NC, where Ben & Jo joined us for a week. They were on their way from their summer gigs near Charlottesville VA to their home in FL. We also had a quick install there.

Sadly,, didn’t get any pics of people this stop

Mystery Stop in Savannah GA

Continuing south, we had one night on the road before landing in Savannah GA for a few days. I’ll talk more about that stop in the post about Fantasy RV Tours.

Family Time in FL

We shifted our time in FL just a little, instead of November 1 to January 1, we stayed 11/15 to 1/15. We took our usual quick trip to PA for Arwen’s birthday. More on this in a later post, but we started walking/hiking to train for a Camino we were walking in April/May. I’ll tell you more about that later.

My sister and her husband hosted again for Christmas, Shannon, Bill, and I cooked and everything was delish! Billy flew down to join us for a few days.

Out to brunch, I have no idea why my Mom is showing us her phone.

Bill and I drove over to the Atlantic coast and spent New Years Eve with Jo & Ben, and Mario & Ellen.

LA and TX with the Sullivans

Before we knew it, it was time to head west. Cindy & James were getting getting their solar upgraded, then there was some fun time planned. We visited new-to-us places, Kemah and Galveston State Park. Our training continued, walking nearly every day, with James and Cindy joining us sometimes. We lent them our box set with the complete series of West Wing, one of our fav TV series, and now they are hooked!

It got COLD while we were in Lake Charles!
SNOW in Louisiana!
Luckily the freezing temps/snow didn’t last too long.

By the time we got to Galveston Island State Park, it had warmed up nicely.

We spent a day at NASA.

Center for Mental Wellness

Next stop was to see The Restless Youngs. It was so good to see them! It is truly like our second (or third) home there in Spring Branch/Canyon Lake TX. We doggie sat Tripp while his family visited Mexico, and Uncle Greg took excellent care of Callie while we traveled to PA for Freya’s birthday. Can you believe she is now 6? Gret & Cori’s neighborhood was perfect for our training, with some hills to challenge us.

Tripp was a great training buddy, always up for a walk.
It’s sad how low Canyon Lake was.

Live Oak Ranch

Traveling to Merkel TX has become part of our routine, and we made our way north for a visit at Live Oak Ranch. Steven left us after only a couple of days, flying across the pond to Ireland to spend time with his parents, while Bill, Linda, and I got walking. Unlike at C&G’s, walking there was pretty flat. Also dusty. We were committed though and we walked about 5 miles a day with full packs.

We had two days walking before Steven left us.

Round Top TX

Bill had some work scheduled in Round Top TX, just a quick battery swap. We appreciated our clients finding us a great spot to park while work was completed. They invited us to dinner, and were just so nice. There was a flea market taking place around us at the same time, and the rest day we took once the install was complete, we walked around a bit to see what all the fuss was about. You can read about it here.

Back to FL

We made our way back to FL, stopping along the way at the Elks Lodge in Slidell. We were originally going to stay a day or two, but we discovered a wonderful trail nearby and stayed a week, walking longer distances with our heavy packs. We also tried a few Harvest Hosts as we meandered back eastward. We continued to add distance and weight when we got to FL, while also getting last minute things we needed.

Stopover at White Oak Park Campground in Lake Charles on our way back to FL.
We’ve always wanted to stay longer at Slidell Elks Lodge, so this time we stayed 6 days! There is a great rails-to-trails path nearby that we took advantage of.

Harvest Host for the night
We stopped at a Harvest Host that was a small family farm.
This guy liked having his face pet.
Fun 2 night Harvest Host stop – a car museum!
Great collection!
Shannon went walking with me when I visited so I didn’t miss any training!

Ready for Europe!

My parents kept Callie for us and the rig went into storage while we put all that training we did into walking the Camino Portuguese for 17 days. More on that in a later post.
