Savannah and St Augustine

It is noteworthy that in all the times we’ve traveled from the northeast to various locations in FL, that we had never stopped in Savannah or St Augustine. Both are very popular tourist stops, but we hadn’t made time to stop in either one. Intent on correcting that, we pulled out of Oregon Inlet Campground, on the Outer Banks of NC, and headed south.

After a quick overnight at a Walmart in Florence, SC, we arrived at the Savannah Elks Lodge with a plan to stay 2 nights.

We decided on an open-air hop-off/hop-on trolley tour. Having never experienced Savannah before, we decided that was the best way to see the most during our short stay. We also chose to do a walking ghost tour, picking the one that offered earbuds so we didn’t need to crowd around to hear the guide.

We absolutely loved Savannah – what an amazing city! It’s beautiful, full of charm and history! I am already looking forward to a return visit for more exploring!

Our drive to St Augustine took about 4 hours and we got parked at the St Augustine Elks Lodge. The inside of the lodge was closed, but they had a really nice outdoor space, complete with a full bar. We enjoyed a couple of drinks and relaxed while looking up tours for the following day. Since St Augustine is such a small area, we decided to just walk around on our own. It was a very nice sunny day, perhaps a bit warmer than ideal, but just gorgeous!

Later that evening, we had made plans to see our friends, Ellen & Mario. They live a short drive from St Augustine in Beverly Beach (near Flagler Beach). It was wonderful to see them and a beautiful evening, making it easy to sit outside and have a socially distant visit. We hopped on their golf cart and headed into town for a yummy pizza dinner.

Mario & Ellen

They truly live in a great location – if it weren’t so far from my kids in PA, I honestly would consider moving there. They live in a community that is right across the street from the beach, and backs up to an intercoastal waterway; they get to enjoy sunrises on the ocean and sunsets on the canal – what more could you want? It’s kind of like OBX, where the ocean is on the east and the sound/bay is on the west. Water all around!

  1. Great photos! Savanna is our favourite US city visited to date. Stay safe and healthy!

    1. We loved how much open space there was in the city! Never more than a few blocks from a square! We loved catching up with Ellen & Mario!

  2. We also only allowed a 2 nite stay in Savannah, we figured a full day would be enough. The parks, monuments, homes and the moss covered trees really need ore time to appreciate. Thanks for the pics!

    1. We have a saying “save some for next time” so there is plenty for when we swing by again!

  3. Two of our favorite places. We really love both. Great pictures. Our son played a soccer game against Flagler when he was in college. Such a beautiful campus. Hope you and Bill are staying healthy and safe.

    1. We had hoped to take a tour of Flagler College but with COVID we couldn’t even walk around on our own. Hugs to you and Frank! ♥️

  4. Those are 2 of my absolute favorite places so far. Next time in St. Augustine, you have to do the behind the scenes tour! Really fascinating history that the general public doesn’t get to see. Also did the on/off trolley tour and your photos brought back great memories. Next time in the general area, you should also visit Charleston and do the horse & buggy tour.

  5. You got great pics of Savannah. We enjoyed the bus tour there as well. So much history to absorb that we thought it gave us the the best of seeing and hearing! Fun that you got to see Ellen (a FB friend I’ve yet to meet) and Mario. Flagler College is so pretty and we have to add the beach to our next visit!

    1. Ellen & Mario are the best! We’ve known them since 2014 and have met up several times now. I was disappointed to not see the campus (except through the fence) at Flagler – will have to wait for next time!

  6. It was FANTASTIC to catch up with you guys….and if anyone comes to St. Augustine please make the drive to come visit us in Flagler Beach…we are always looking to make new friends!

    1. Thanks for hosting an awesome socially distant visit! Aside from no hugs we had a great time!

  7. We loved it too. Just a beautiful place! How fun to see Mario and Ellen! We hope to see them this June!

  8. Savannah is just gorgeous. So much history. We stayed nearby for a few days at Red Gate campground and did the shuttle as well. Would love to go back someday! Never made it to St Augustine, was on the list when we worked in Florida. Another trip on our list.

    1. We will definitely go back to both places – we got just enough of a “taste” to plan a return trip!
