Charleston SC Fun and Friends!

This past fall, Bill and I visited two cities (Savannah GA, and St Augustine FL) we hadn’t visited before, in spite of driving by them many times on our way north and south between FL and PA. While in TN, we decided to detour to Charleston SC before continuing on to New Bern NC, and OBX to see Lee and Tracy and we are so glad we did!

Bill and Lee went to see the USS Yorktown, one of 24 Essex-class Aircraft Carriers built for WWII. They had a great time. I caught up on a few chores and when Tracy was able to take off a few hours we went for pedicures! I hadn’t had one in AGES and my feet were so happy when we were done!

Their daughter, Kryston brought her son Oliver over for a visit. He is very close in age to our Freya and he is so cute! It was great seeing them, although it did make me a little homesick for my girls!

We visited the world-famous Angel Tree. It is a HUGE tree and was right near the campground where we were staying.

As you notice the people, it shows how HUGE the tree is!

There is so much to do in the Charleston area, but we ultimately decided to visit Magnolia Plantation. We missed the best of the flower blooms, but the grounds were still amazing and we learned a lot! I’ll let the pics show you all about it! Sadly, we weren’t permitted to take pics inside the home itself, but the grounds were beautiful.

Our tour guide gave us a lot of great information about the history of the plantation, including how it was built and maintained by slaves for years. He also told us that in the past year, they’ve had more people interested in the tour of the slave quarters than ever before. Bill and I agreed with him that was a good thing, as the more people know about that dark time in our country, the more likely it is they will not tolerate discrimination against people whose skin color is different than their own.

We had 3 quick nights in Charleston, but we packed in a lot. On our final evening, Tracy and Lee treated us to a fabulous dinner at Halls Chophouse in Charleston. Their son-in-law Jeremy manages the place and they have raved about it quite a bit, so we were excited to go. It lived up to the hype and then some – everything we put in our mouths was perfectly prepared and delicious. Since their specialty is steaks, three of our group had the ribeye, but not me. At Tracy’s urging, I decided on the lamb chops and they did not disappoint. Not even the next day when I ate my leftovers for lunch! Thanks so much guys for one of our best meals ever! Rather than steal Tracy’s pics of the artful plates, check out her post of our visit here.

  1. How fun! I like Charleston better than Savannah. We had to miss the Angel tree because we were pulling our rig and had no place to pull over. I’d like to go back again there was so much to do! Nice to meet up with Lee and Trace!

    1. We really enjoyed both cities, they have totally different “feels” which I appreciate. It’s always awesome to see Trace and Lee!

  2. Certainly good times are had when meeting up with fellow bloggers on the road. Missed the Angel Tree with no easy place to park the RV, but did enjoy our time at Fort Sumter.

    1. There was so many things to pick from to do during our short visit – we will put Fort Sumter on the list for next time!

  3. Very nice post and wonderful photos. Looks like you had a lot of fun. Hope you had some Shrimp and Grits!

    1. Thanks David! Unfortunately we didn’t get shrimp & grits this time but can add them to the list for next time!

  4. How fun! We really liked Charleston as well and are hoping to get back and see all we missed. Like that amazing tree! Beautiful flowers. As our true history becomes more available I’m not surprised at the increased interest in the history of slavery here. Wonderful catch on that heron in flight!!!

    1. There is plenty to see and do in Charleston! Including Learning about its role in slavery. It was hard to take a bad pic at Magnolia Plantation!

  5. So great full you went out of your way to see us. See you in Sept. love you !
